Trends in bail and sentencing outcomes
The NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research have recently published a paper "Trends in bail and sentencing outcomes in New South Wales Criminal Courts 1993 - 2007" by Rohan Lulham and Jacqueline Fitzgerald in Crime and Justice Bulletin (2008) No 124.
The Bail Act 1978 (NSW) was amended in 2007 by the Bail Amendment Bill 2007 making it more difficult for people charged with an offence to be granted bail. This has led to more people being in remand, in particular, young people. Adele Horin outlines this predicament in an article in the SMH.
