Bill of Rights

The Australian Parliamentary Library has issued an online research guide titled Bill of Rights. This guide contains links to resources and documents relating to attempts at a Bill or Charter of Rights at the Commonwealth, State and Territory level. Included is a summary of arguments for and against a BOR as well as links to speeches and papers by key players in the debate. Information on public opinion polls is also included. Some comparative material on overseas countries which have a Bill of Rights is also available. The Guide will be regularly updated.

This guide would provide teachers with an excellent teaching resource to get students to explore reasons for a Bill of Rights as well as reasons against.

Towards a National Charter of Human Rights

The Federal government is currently conducting an inquiry into whether there is a need for a Charter of Rights. The NSW Parliamentary Library has written a e-brief outlining the issue.

LIAC recently published a Hot Topic on this timely subject.  Human Rights (65) provides an overview of human rights law from its origins and sources, through to the development of modern human rights law. Examines how human rights law operates in Australia, with reference to current issues. Includes the full text of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and further information resources.  LIAC have also published a Hot Topic on Bill of Rights

If you would like to read more about Human Rights, have a look at our Human Rights page of the Legal Studies Research Guide.  This identifies both print and web-based resources.
